About Belfast Centre
Belfast is the largest city and urban area in Northern Ireland, the second largest city in Ireland and the fifteenth largest city in the UK, its population being approximated at a number of more than 267 000 inhabitants. It has been, historically, a centre for linen industry, tobacco production, rope-making and shipbuilding, today, remaining a centre for industry, but also, for the arts, higher education and business.
Archaeological evidences trace its origins back to the Bronze Age, the Giant's Ring, which is a 5000-year-old henge, being located near the city, and the Iron Age hill forts being still seen in the surrounding hills. Belfast has been the capital of Northern Ireland, since its establishment, in 1921, and was officially granted city status by Queen Victoria, in 1888. Its motto is "Pro tanto quid retribuamus", which is taken from Psalm 116 Verse 12 in the Latin Vulgate Bible, meaning "For (Pro) so much (tanto) what (quid) we shall repay (retribuamus)".
Belfast attracts tourists with its historical charm and architectural beauties, including with the wide range of appealing attractions, spread throughout its area, currently experiencing a successful tourist boom, being considered, today, one of the most visited cities in the UK and the second most visited on the island of Ireland.
